But how can you tell if your brakes need attending to?
There are a number of signs that tell you that your vehicles brakes have to be inspected:
1) Pulling - If your vehicle is pulling when you apply the brakes then this is an indicator that one of your brake pads have worn out and must be attended to.
2) Grinding / Squeaking - If you can hear squeaking or grinding when applying the brakes, this is an indicator that your brake pads need replacing. The squeak / grind occurs when the pad has worn down to metal and is grinding with the brake disc.
3) High Handbrake - If the handbrake is pulling up further than usual, it will need adjusting. In most modern cars, this is 8 clicks. If the handbrake lever reaches the end of it's tether then the vehicle will fail an MOT.
4) Dashboard light - Some vehicles have brake sensors, if a brake warning light appears on the dashboard then you should get your brakes attended to ASAP as this could mean several different faults with your brakes.
